Fifth Grade
My name is Kate Chambers and I am one of the 5th grade teachers at The Madeleine. This is my fourth year here and my sixth year teaching. I am from Philadelphia, and moved to Portland in 2004 to attend the University of Portland for my Master’s Degree. There I met my husband and somehow never got around to moving back to Philadelphia. My husband is the vice-principal at a Catholic middle school in Portland. My favorite food is pizza, however chocolate comes in a close second. I love photography and am currently working on a small business on the side.
I am Michelle Doran, the other 5th grade teacher at The Madeleine. This is my eighth year teaching at The Madeleine. I taught 1st grade for seven years prior to the birth of my son. This is my tenth year of teaching overall. I am originally from Washington, but have lived in Portland for nine years. I enjoy spending time with my husband and two year old son.
In 5th grade, the students make the big leap from downstairs to upstairs, red shirts and all! 5th graders learn the ways of organization and responsibility.
Academic highlights for this year include:
- Religion: Second Step, Steps to Respect, sacraments
- Reading: novel studies, literature circles
- Writing: 6 + 1 Traits of Writing
- Vocabulary
- Math: place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions/decimals, measurement & geometry.
- Science: life, physical & space.
- Social Studies: U.S. history, government, geography of U.S., state study
5th graders work toward fulfilling goals through their everyday work, as well as through long-term projects. It is our hope that the students will adopt for themselves a love of learning. We make this our goal everyday and incorporate activities that allow students to showcase their strengths.
